Brow tinting

Eyebrow tinting
is an easy way to frame and transform your face in a long-lasting way, making your daily beauty routine quicker and hassle-free. It’s a simple beauty hack that requires little effort or expense, yet has a high impact. Trust us, it’s a win win!

Here we cover everything you need to know about eyebrow tinting so that you can feel confident before booking to have yours done at home, in London,Brighton or Manchester.

What is eyebrow tinting?

As long as you’ve got brows which have been shaped well, an eyebrow tint makes for daily ready-to-go brows with no fuss. No filling in is necessary. Instead, your brows will stand out on their own, framing your face beautifully.

Eyebrow tinting involves applying semi-permanent dye to your eyebrow hairs in the colour of your choice. It’s very common to have eyebrows which are, at least in part, much paler than your hair colour. Tinting helps to ensure that the shades match – and this is what leads to a bolder look.

How long does eyebrow tinting last?

Eyebrow tinting lasts between 3-8 weeks, with most choosing to have theirs redone monthly. It’s a low cost and fast beauty treatment, which can be done professionally at home, so a regular schedule is easy to keep up with.

We really recommend having them done by a professional as they use professional quality dye which lasts much longer – and definitely looks better! Also, if you opt for a slightly darker shade than your intended hair colour, this helps them to last longer. The original intensity fades, and you’re still left with a full-looking brow.

Is eyebrow tinting permanent?

No, eyebrow tinting is not permanent. It’s also not just your usual daily makeup. Your eyebrows ‘grow out’ and shed, on a cycle, just like the hair on your head.

How long does eyebrow tinting take to do?

Having an eyebrow tint is one of the fastest beauty treatments available on the market. It only takes around 25 minutes. If you have a mobile beautician come to you at home, then it can be done in less time than it takes to watch an episode of your favourite show!

Is eyebrow tinting safe?

Eyebrow tinting involves applying dye to the face, particularly near the eye. For this reason, special dyes need to be used. We recommend asking that your beautician uses vegetable-based and natural dyes. You should not attempt to tint your own eyebrows using hair dye; this is dangerous.

The biggest concern for most people is having an allergic reaction to the products used. If you get your eyebrows tinted by a professional brow technician, they should do a patch test first to make sure the dye is safe to be used on your brows.

Does eyebrow tinting cause hair loss?

Brow tinting shouldn’t cause you to lose any more hair than you usually would. It’s non-invasive and doesn’t remove hairs – it only makes them appear darker. It doesn’t involve using bleach as the aim is to go darker, not lighter. As long as you are having your brows tinted by a professional, there shouldn’t be any damage to your hairs or follicles at all.

Getting your eyebrows tinted

So, you’re probably excited by the idea of getting your eyebrows tinted. You might even be tempted by DIY. A word of warning, eyebrow tinting is complicated to those not professionally trained, and it’s even harder to do on your own brows. It can even be dangerous, wielding dye near your eyes, only reliant on a mirror.

We really recommend going to a salon, or having a professional beautician come to your home to tint your eyebrows. As we’ve already said, eyebrow tinting is extremely low cost, and isn’t time consuming at all.

How to choose the right eyebrow tint colour

If you’re unsure, your brow beautician can help you decide on the right colour and shade. It’s a fine balance. Too dark and your brows may look too intense, giving you a harsh look.. But too light and  they won’t shape your face and features as effectively, and of course will fade faster.

Your brow technician will consider your current hair colour, as well as your skin tone. All of Secret Spa’s professionals will  talk you through the process. They’ll discuss whether you’re aiming for something very natural, or a notably enhanced bold, structured look, and will accommodate accordingly.

Brow technicians carry a far wider choice of shades and colours, which is another benefit of having your brows tinted professionally. They may even be able to mix different shades to give you a more natural finish, if that’s what you wish.

What happens during an eyebrow tint treatment?

Firstly, you should do a patch test at least 24 hours prior to your appointment to check for any allergies, especially if it’s your first time, you have sensitive skin or your medical history has changed. Make sure you have a clean face, clear of any make-up before your appointment. This could affect the result of your treatment.

When you get your brows tinted, the technician will start by discussing your desired look and select the best colour for you.. Once you’re happy with the chosen colour, they will then clean your brows to remove any makeup residue which may hinder the hairs taking the full colour.

Then they will use petroleum jelly to cover and protect the skin all around your brows. This prevents any staining outside of the area being coloured.

The dye used is usually quite gel-like. This is smoothed on in the direction of your brow hair growth, and then also applied again in the opposite direction, to ensure complete coverage. The dye is then left in place for several minutes to develop.

The brow dye, and then the petroleum jelly, is removed. And voila, you’re left with striking and impressive brows just like that.

Aftercare advice for eyebrow tinting

Eyebrow tinting really is so simple and there’s not too much aftercare that you need to think about.

However, we really recommend that you don’t wash your face, or touch your brows, for around 12 hours after tinting. You shouldn’t book facials or spray tans on the same day as your brow tint, as the treatments will work against each other. Similarly, avoid the pool or a shower, and don’t do exercise that will lead to sweating. This just helps the tint to last longer as the dye can truly transfer into the depths of the hairs without being disturbed.

When using makeup remover, don’t wipe over your brows. Or if you do, make sure you opt for a cream-based or gel-based product, rather than one with an oil base. This will be less likely to strip the colour from the brow.

When you’re grooming your brows, take it easy with the spoolie brushing so that you don’t brush out your newly-tinted hairs.

But most importantly of all, the beauty of eyebrow tinting is that your brows become low maintenance, so  just enjoy them!  Book your eyebrow tint today.
