Inside the Luxury Spray Tan Experience: From Application to Aftercare
Apr 4, 2025

For many of us, a golden glow adds that polished, post-holiday finish — no flights required. Whether you're preparing for an event or just want a little boost, a professional spray tan at home is the most effortless and skin-safe way to look radiant.
In this guide, we walk you through the entire journey. From what to expect during your appointment to the aftercare that keeps your glow going, here’s everything you need to know about the luxury spray tan experience.
How does a spray tan work?
The active ingredient in spray tan is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). When it reacts with amino acids in the outer layer of your skin, it creates a sun-kissed tint that deepens over several hours. Your therapist will match the right shade to your skin tone for a natural, even finish.
Is spray tanning safe?
Yes. A spray tan gives you that golden glow without the risks of UV damage. There’s no exposure to harmful rays and no link to the concerns associated with sunbeds. Just remember: spray tans do not contain SPF, so you’ll still need sun protection when outdoors.
Before starting, your therapist will carry out a consultation to check for any allergies or sensitivities.
How to prepare for your spray tan
To ensure a flawless result, follow these essential steps:
Exfoliate 24 hours in advance using a non-oil scrub or mitt, paying special attention to dry areas.
Avoid applying moisturiser, deodorant or perfume before your appointment, as these can block the tan.
Ensure skin is clean and product-free on the day of your treatment.
What to wear during your spray tan
Most clients go topless or wear a dark thong. Disposable options are provided, but feel free to use your own. If you prefer more coverage, a bikini is perfectly acceptable. Choose dark clothing to avoid stains and be mindful of potential tan lines depending on your outfit plans.
Will the spray tan stain your home?
Not at all. Your therapist will set up a pop-up tanning tent to fully protect your space. The entire session is neat, self-contained and stress-free.
What does the spray tan process involve?
Your therapist will:
Set up the equipment in a suitable space.
Provide barrier cream for areas like elbows, knees and ankles.
Offer sticky feet to protect the soles of your feet.
Guide you through simple body positions for even application.
The spray may feel cool on the skin and you’ll be asked to hold your breath briefly while your face is tanned. Once applied, you’ll be given a few minutes to dry before dressing.
What to wear after your spray tan
Wear loose, floaty, dark clothing and flip-flops. Avoid anything tight, including underwear, waistbands or sports bras, which could rub and cause streaking.
How long does a spray tan take to develop?
Most tans take 8 hours to fully develop. During this time, avoid showering, sweating or applying product. Sleeping in your tan is often the easiest option. Don’t be alarmed by the initial depth of colour, that’s just the guide colour and will rinse off in the shower.
For quicker results, we also offer an Express Spray Tan that develops in just 1–3 hours.
How long will your spray tan last?
Your tan will typically last up to 7 days, depending on the formula and how well you care for your skin. Showering, swimming and exfoliation can all affect longevity.
How to make your spray tan last longer
Moisturise daily with an oil-free formula.
Avoid hot baths, body oils and harsh shower products.
Pat skin dry after showering instead of rubbing with a towel.
Exfoliate lightly after 3 days to help your tan fade evenly.
Top up your glow with a gradual tanning lotion, like Fake Bake’s Self Tan Lotion.
Can you get a spray tan when pregnant?
Yes, but we advise waiting until after your first trimester. DHA only reacts with the outer layer of skin and doesn’t enter the bloodstream. If in doubt, consult your doctor.
Can you spray tan after lash extensions?
Yes — just wait at least 24 hours after your lash appointment. Avoid contact with the lashes during the spray, and wash gently afterwards.
Can you tan through a spray tan?
You can tan and burn through a spray tan. Always apply a high SPF as normal.
Can you shave after a spray tan?
It’s best to shave before your appointment, but if you need to after, use a new razor to minimise exfoliation and preserve your colour.
Can you wear make-up after a spray tan?
Avoid make-up until you’ve rinsed off your guide colour. Applying it too early can affect the tan’s development and lead to unevenness.
How long after a spray tan can you work out?
Wait at least 8 hours before exercising. Sweat and friction can interfere with development and cause streaks.
How long does a spray tan take?
The full at-home spray tan experience takes around 30 minutes. With options like the Express Spray Tan, you can go from pale to golden in as little as 3 hours.
How much does a spray tan cost?
Our spray tans start from £47. View our full spray tan menu for options and pricing.
