About the treatment

What is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage is the one most people picture when they think of massage at all. Your therapist works with long, flowing strokes, kneading and gentle circular pressure to ease tension and settle the nervous system.

The pressure is light to medium throughout, so it suits anyone who wants to unwind rather than have deep-set knots worked out. Where a Deep Tissue Massage goes after chronic tension, this one is aimed at relaxation and circulation.

It runs 70 minutes, full body, at home in London. Our guide explains what a Swedish massage involves and what it does.

Most people finish looser and noticeably calmer, and stay exactly where they are.

FAQS

Want to know more?

What is a Swedish massage?
A Swedish massage is a full-body treatment using long flowing strokes, kneading and gentle circular pressure with warm oils. It is aimed at relaxation and circulation rather than deep-set knots, which is why it is the most commonly booked massage.
What are the benefits of a Swedish massage?
It eases everyday tension, improves circulation and calms the nervous system, which is why people find they sleep better afterwards. It is the one to choose when the goal is switching off rather than treating a specific ache.
Is a Swedish massage the same as a deep tissue massage?
No. A Swedish massage uses light to medium pressure for relaxation and blood flow; a deep tissue massage uses firm, sustained pressure to reach chronic tension held deep in the muscle. Choose by the problem, not the pressure.
How should I prepare for my at-home Swedish massage?
A warm shower beforehand helps the muscles relax. Have a quiet, warm room with space for the massage bed, which is 6ft by 2ft, plus two large bath towels and one hand towel. Your therapist brings everything else.
What should I wear for a Swedish massage?
The treatment uses oils, so undress to your underwear or to whatever level you are comfortable with. Your therapist steps out while you settle on the bed, and again at the end so you can dress in your own time.
Can I have a Swedish massage while pregnant?
Not this one. In the first trimester massage is not permitted, and from the second trimester onward book a Pregnancy Massage instead, which is tailored to you and carried out by a Beauty Therapist trained for it.
