Best things to do in Wandsworth this summer

Things to Do in Wandsworth

We love Wandsworth! It’s everything that’s fabulous about London without being amongst the central tourist traps. There are excellent bars, shops and restaurants, but there are also a whole range of things to do in Wandsworth.

From ambles through leafy commons and parks to picking up a bouquet at Battersea Flower Station, there’s so much choice for Wandsworth summer activities. So, for summery things to do in and around Wandsworth town, read on!

1. Take a picnic to Battersea Park

Load up your picnic hamper (or better still, treat yourself to a brunch platter from Bakery Lamour!) and head to Battersea Park. Come a lazy summer’s day, it is definitely one of our favourite Wandsworth things to do! Lay out your rug and enjoy relaxing in such a beautiful park.

If you’re feeling energetic or want to get involved, then there’s plenty to keep you occupied, from getting behind the oars on the boating lake to challenging your friends to a game at the mini-golf course. If you’re feeling particularly alive and daring then there’s a Go Ape high ropes course here too. For those looking for a more sedate activity, we recommend combining your picnic with a wander around The Pump House Gallery.

An alternative park which can also serve as a wonderful setting for a picnic is of course Wandsworth Park. Enjoy a walk along the river or take to the tennis courts.

2. Wander along the Wandle

One of everyone’s favourite Wandsworth activities come sunny days is to enjoy the River Wandle walk. The path down to Earlsfield takes you along the river, wending into parks as you go.

The full walk is 14 miles for the particularly committed, but no one says you have to walk it all! We do like finishing in Earlsfield though as you can then round off your efforts with a drink or two in one of the pubs.

3. Enjoy some fringe theatre at Theatre 503

Theatre 503 is a Wandsworth and wider-London gem. This summer, come and see No Particular Order by Joel Tan. Theatre 503 also offers fabulous masterclasses allowing you to get really stuck in, and they are undoubtedly some of the best activities in Wandsworth.

4. Have some fun at Battersea Power Station

Battersea Power Station has become a fantastic place to while away time, just a stone’s throw from Wandsworth. It’s packed with bars, restaurants and shops and there are more set to open soon. There is always a catalogue of events on here, so do check out what’s on.

5. Or make it floral at Battersea Flower Station

On the other side of the park from Battersea Power Station is Battersea Flower Station. This is such a happy garden centre and florists for buying some blooms to liven up your home, or add the finishing touch if you’re entertaining. You won’t be able to resist taking a snap or two and you’ll love your experience.

6. Go for a summer splash at Tooting Bec Lido

Tooting Bec Lido comes into its own in the summer months. Keep your eye on the weather forecast and get in early to book your slot with a group of friends. Highly popular on hot sunny days, you can dip in the pool to cool off and between swims enjoy a cold drink under the gazebo. This historic pool is now over 100 years old and was one of the first lidos in Britain!

7. Spend some time on the High Street

Of course, one of the favourite things to do in Wandsworth is simply to spend some time on the High Street. Wandsworth High Street is a far cry from the dying high streets of many suburbs and towns – it’s a vibrant hub of cafés, shops and bars.

The High Street particularly comes alive in summer. Pop into a café and order a slice of fresh cake to enjoy as you watch the world go by.

8. Take to the water at Wandsworth Pier

Of course, you can hop on board a Thames Clipper at Wandsworth and enjoy travelling into Central London, or wherever you fancy. Pick a lovely summer’s evening and you may just be treated to the Thames turning golden in the evening light.

Alternatively, round up your best pals and hire a Thames Party Boat. It’s bound to be one of the most memorable Wandsworth activities!

9. Go on pointe at the Royal Academy of Dance

Check out what’s on at the Royal Academy of Dance and you may just be surprised at the variety of their programme. However, if you’re looking for things to do in Wandsworth and want to try your feet at dancing with some of the best tuition in the world, then join one of their workshops or even have private lessons. Those in Wandsworth are spoiled by having the academy on their doorstep and local residents benefit from unique discounts.

10. Shield from the summer rain at Gravity

Let’s be realistic, it wouldn’t be The Great British Summer without at least one day of downpours. That doesn’t mean the summer fun needs to stop though. All you need are some good friends and you can enjoy a whole range of experiences at Gravity. Choose from bowling to e-karting and from Electric Gamebox to Street Golf.

11. Get fascinated at the Sewing Machine Museum

Before non-sewers switch off from lack of interest, read on! The Sewing Machine Museum is only open once a month, so try to make your plans around it. This isn’t just a fascinating insight into the history of this incredible machine; it’s also a fascinating insight into the dedication and love of just a few people and what they can do. It’s enough to inspire you! There are over 600 machines here, including those once owned by celebrities and many with fascinating stories to tell.

12. Head over to Kew

Ok, so we’re pushing beyond Wandsworth’s boundaries a little, but within easy reach of Wandsworth is Kew Gardens. Kew is always wonderful for a visit, but this summer they have their Food Forever event.

This event is all about learning about biodiversity loss and how to protect our food from extinction. The learning is being delivered through art installations throughout the gardens as well as talks, workshops and after hour events.
